THERE IS / THERE ARE


"There is" (der iz) ve "there are" (der ar) kelimeleri "vardýr" anlamýna gelir. Fakat "Have - Has"de olduðu gibi "sahiplik" bildirmezler sadece bir þeyin (bir yerde) "var" olduðunu, "mevcut" olduðunu bildirirler. "There is" tekil isimlerle birlikte; "there are" ise çoðul isimlerle birlikte kullanýlýr.

Örnek:

There is a table in this room. (Bu odada bir masa var)

There are two tables in this room. (Bu odada iki masa var)

There is an officer in this office. (Bu büroda bir memur var)

There are ten workers in this factory. (Bu fabrikada on iþçi var)


Bu cümleler olumsuz yapýlýrsa “be”ye "not" eklenir.

Örnek:

There is not a table in this room. (Bu odada bir masa yok)

There are not two tables in this room. (Bu odada iki masa yok)

There is not an officer in this office. (Bu büroda bir memur yok)

There are not ten workers in this factory. (Bu fabrikada on iþçi yok)


Bu cümleler soru yapýlýrsa “be”i özneden önce kullanýlýr.

Is there a table in this room? (Bu odada bir masa var mý?)

Are there two tables in this room? (Bu odada iki masa var mý?)

Is there an officer in this office? (Bu büroda bir memur var mý?)

Are there ten workers in this factory? (Bu fabrikada on iþçi var mý?)


Bu yapýda “be”nin tekil (is) ya da çoðul (are) olarak yazýlmasý “be”den sonra gelen kelimenin "tekil" ya da "çoðul" olmasýna göre þekillenir.


Örnek:

There is a table and four chairs in this room.

There are four chairs and a table in this room.

Görüldüðü gibi “a table” tekil olduðu için birinci cümlede “is”, “four chairs” çoðul olduðu için ikinci cümlede “are” kullanýldý.

There is - there are yapýsýnda “be” de zamana göre “be - am - is - are - was - were - been” þekillerinden birine girer.

Örnekler:

There is a table in this room. (Simple Present)

There was a table in this room an hour ago. (Simple Past)

There has been a woman at the door for three hours. (Present Perfect)

There had been a good film on TV before I left. (Past Perfect)

There will be a new building here next year. (Future Tense)

Look! There is going to be an accident! (Near Future)

There must be someone at home. (Modal)
